The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Online Education

21. october 2024

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. Technologies like ChatGPT have gained enormous popularity, with more and more people using them. In 2023, the number of ChatGPT users rose to approximately 100 million (Tamim, 2023). This figure clearly demonstrates how important AI is in modern life, although public understanding of its benefits often remains limited. Artificial intelligence offers revolutionary possibilities for online education by enabling the creation of personalized and interactive learning experiences that can significantly improve learning outcomes.

ChatGPT, as one of the most well-known tools in education, enables the generation of text and answering questions, thereby contributing to an improved learning experience. Its ability to process natural language and quickly access information allows students to acquire knowledge more effectively. This opens up a new dimension of learning where students can interact with AI tools to deepen their understanding of the material.

The Potential of Artificial Intelligence in Education

Artificial intelligence has three main applications in education: support in teaching, automation of administrative tasks, and personalization of learning (Zhai, 2022; Grassini, 2023). Using ChatGPT can increase learning efficiency by tailoring experiences to the needs of individual students. This adaptability allows teachers to better address different learning styles and needs of their students. In addition, AI assists with data analysis and research work, making it easier to complete assignments while adhering to academic guidelines. Despite its advantages, the use of artificial intelligence also brings challenges. ChatGPT learns from large datasets, which can lead to biases and errors. The quality of the data on which AI is based strongly influences its effectiveness. It is also essential to consider the ethical aspects of AI use in education, such as data protection and transparency (Grassini, 2023). These dilemmas are crucial for ensuring the responsible use of AI in the learning process.

Student Survey

At DOBA Faculty, a survey was conducted in May and June 2023 to explore students' understanding and experience with AI tools. Results showed that more than 40% of respondents had no experience with AI tools. Among those who used them, ChatGPT was the most popular tool. Students reported various reasons for using AI tools: exploring topics, generating ideas, and general support in learning. However, they also expressed concerns about the reliability of information and potential dependency on such tools.

Students voiced concerns about the credibility of content, ethical dilemmas, and the risk of becoming overly dependent on AI tools. They also emphasized the need for better understanding of how AI works. Many believed that including education on the proper use of AI tools in the curriculum would be beneficial (Plantak & Štefotič, 2024).

This raises the question of how best to integrate artificial intelligence into the learning process. Our faculty is committed to the responsible use of AI in education. We have introduced guidelines for the use of such tools and organized events for teachers on integrating AI into teaching methods. We also plan to repeat the survey and analyze the results to better understand the impact of artificial intelligence on online learning and contribute to the development of sustainable academic communities.

By integrating artificial intelligence into the learning process, we can improve learning outcomes and increase student engagement. However, it is essential to do so responsibly and ethically and to provide appropriate support for both students and teachers as they navigate these new technologies.
